Indica vs Sativa vs Hybrid

General Information on the Effects of Different Marijuana Strains

Today, there are literally THOUSANDS of different strains of cannabis out there. And there can be wildly varying degrees of potency and effects for each. But in general, you'll find three categories. The main two are INDICA strains and SATIVA strains. The third strain is just a mix of those two (or hybrid). However, the mix doesn't have to be a perfect 50/50 combination; there can be degrees of dominance of either kind. Nor do hybrids have to have only two strains mixed in. Being that there are many, many strains of indicas and sativas themselves, that means there's a whole world of complex marijuana strains to choose from.

Here are some of the general effects of indica and sativa strains:

Indica Strains

Indica cannabis highs are often described as "couch-lock" highs. In fact, an easy way to remember which affects belong to indica strains is by remembering the phrase, in da couch (thanks, Doug Benson). Indicas can induce an overall sense of serenity, peace, and relaxation. You may not even want to move. Indicas are great for hanging with friends, watching movies, boat and car rides (assuming you aren't driving), and getting in touch with nature. Having trouble sleeping? Indica strains are perfect for calming your muscles and generally knocking you the hell out. Indicas strains might be responsible for the stereotypical stoner image of being lazy. But for our friends and family that have anxiety problems, sleep problems, and sleep disorders, this negative stereotype is immediately diminished when they experience the positive effects of indica cannabis.

Sativa Strains

Sativa cannabis highs are great for boosts of mental energy and for creative insight and imagination. Sativas can enhance experiences of artistic events like concerts and movies. Sex, sexual experiences, and overall sensuality really benefit from sativa strains. Many people prefer the uplifting and cerebral highs of sativas, especially for daytime use. Sativis are also known for the ability to numb your body, reduce pain, and combat depression. Sativas make a great pairing for those who can also experience ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response).

Hybrid Strains

As mentioned above, mixing sativa and indica strains are called hybrid strains. Because every strain has unique characteristics and traits, there will likely be varying effects of each one you'll encounter.

Oh, there's one more: Cannabis Ruderalis

But it seems to be mostly forgotten about! Cannabis Ruderalis is a subspecies of Cannabis Sativa. The term was originally used in the former Soviet Union to describe the varieties of hemp that had escaped cultivation and adapted to the surrounding region. Unlike Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa, Ruderalis lacks the potent pyschoactive properties and for this fundamental reason Ruderalis has been largely ignored. Ruderalis plants grow much shorter and can stand much harsher climates. It's also auto-flowering: buds grow based on the age of the plant, rather than changes in light cycles like Sativias or Indicas.

The first generation of cannabis indica/sativa strains crossed with Ruderalis genetics were called 'Automatic'. Dutch Passion made their automatic strains fully feminised and called them ‘AutoFem’ strains. Today some of these AutoFem strains are more popular than the traditional varieties which we have sold for deacdes. AutoFem strains have been a revolution for medical and recreational growers. They are maintenance free, they grow to around 1 metre (easy to hide) and are ready in just 10 weeks. Everyone is growing them.

Choosing the Right Cannabis Strain

Choosing the right cannabis strain may seem overwhelming at first. But remember: the world is your oyster! It may take some time to find the right balance of effects for each person, but be assured that there is a strain available for YOU out there. is an invaluable resource for learning about new strains.
